It’s always a huge game against Cardiff, but this one feels packed with potential significance.

The Wrexham Angle

Last weekend was the perfect start to the title defence, but now we move on to a testing away game against the side most would expect to be our main challengers for the Adran Premier title. Jenny Sugarman sprung a couple of surprises in a lightly-rotated line-up against Aberystwyth last Sunday, which is surely how we will continue to approach the fixtures against sides likely to be scrapping it out for a Phase Two place once the table splits. She has always been willing to be flexible in her approach to matches, taking the opposition’s profile into account, but beyond that we’ll surely see something resembling our strongest eleven at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Sarah Harvey surely comes into contention for a place at the back after her excellent form in pre-season and the Champions League, while if Mikayla Cook is fully recovered from the back injury which dogged her Summer, she could make her league debut against the club she sensationally swapped for us between campaigns. We also have Millie Davies in the fold, having looked good down the left side as a triallist in the second half against Watford. Having cleared out the left side of the squad in the summer with the departures of Hannah Snape, Carra Jones and Leah Burke, we suddenly have very srong options on that part of the pitch with the trio mentioned above all able to play there, plus new signings Lydia Sallaway and Bella Reidford, who both impressed last Sunday.

The concussion protocols ruled Faye Knox out of last weekend, but it is to be hoped she will be available to add to Wrexham’s considerable firepower at the Cardiff City Stadium, especially considering the magnificent performance she put on there last season, which was capped by a memorable goal and equally iconic celebration! Wrexham would be glad of such cold-blooded finishing, as the sole concern arising from the Aberystwyth game was a lack of goals. Obviously, 4-0 is a fantastic outcome, but we should have scored more in a match which saw us create a raft of chances.

The View From The Other Side

Cardiff have undergone a Summer of massive change, with serial trophy winner Iain Darbyshire vacating the head coach position and a series of high profile departures necessitating a squad refresh. This could be a season of transition for the southern giants, and that impression was reinforced by the scoreline of their opening game of the season, as they lost 3-1 away to Swansea City. However, the result was not a fair reflection of a match in which Cardiff’s reshaped forward line created, but missed, plenty of opportunities, especially before the concession of two goals in two minutes, the second a freakish own goal by Shannon Evans, decided the nature of the game.

Noah Bushby, Darbyshire’s assistant who has been promoted to his mentor’s post, struck a philosophical tone afterwards, but will appreciate that following up such a disappointment with a game against the champions is hardly ideal. There’s scope to pile even more pressure on The Bluebirds next weekend too, with the ever-awkward Briton Ferry coming to town.

It is a disappointing result, I think the performance was stronger than the result shows. They adapted to the conditions better than we did. We missed a number of chances throughout the game, but key chances in the first 15 minutes to go ahead.

I don’t think it’s a confidence knocker. I’ve said a number of times, it’s such a new squad. We’ve got to gel together and it’s so fresh; we had four debuts today and two of our new signings were out. It won’t knock our confidence. It’s frustrating, of course it is, no one wants to lose a South Wales derby.

Despite the pressured scenario which is developing, The Bluebirds camp has an air of positivity about it, as a number of their signings look very interesting on paper. Kate Oakley was absent with an injury, but the signing from Derby County has pace and is a potential threat on the wings. Halie Richards is a powerful forward player who drew praise when analysed in the first episode of this season’s very enjoyable “Sis, Nobody Asked For This” podcast hosted by Cardiff skipper Hannah Power and her sister, former Wales international Katie Sherwood

They also have high hopes for Gillian Keenan, who has arrived from the Irish league having played for Athlone Town when they won the title who, like Richards, can play across the front line.

During pre-season, there has been a lot of hard work and the new players that we’ve signed have gelled in really well. It’s a squad with great quality and togetherness, and preparations have been positive for us.

Grace Olson got the nod in goal, but didn’t have the happiest of times, so Daniela Kosińska could come in for her debut. The Polish keeper has an interesting profile, having had spells at Aston Villa and Stoke City, and arrived in the week before the opening match of the season from Honved,

Lili Jones’ next appearance will set Wrexham’s outright appearances record as she will overtake Rosie Hughes’ 105.

Ava Suckley’s next goal will put her in outright second place in the list of Wrexham’s all-time scorers, overtaking Amber Lightfoot.
