Well, he did try to tell us he was hurt!
Joslain Mayebi clearly looked concerned at having to carry on against Southport, and now we know why: a ruptured achilles is expected to rule him out for eight months.
As he’s statistically Wrexham’s greatest ever keeper – in terms of goals conceded per game he’s one of only two goalies who have let in less than one a game – he’s quite a loss. By way of contrast, young Andy Coughlin has yet to keep a clean sheet so far in his career and can’t be expected to step in for the rest of the title run-in.
So Andy Morrell’s ability to pull off an astute signing will be seriously examined as he looks to bring in a new keeper. In some respects getting a keeper in is a little more straightforward than an outfield player: an unused goalkeeper is easy to spot, and has no chance of playing in a different position to get a game: there are alwasy a few good goalies on the market who aren’t getting matches. The carrots of a potential match at Wembley and the chance to take part in a promotion run-in are also in Morrell’s possession.
However, he could have done without such a distraction right now. He’s already spending a lot of time scouring the market to bulk out his squad, and hardly needed to open up a new line of inquiry. Perhaps most damagingly for him, by drafting in a new keeper he might not be able to afford one of his existing transfer targets.
So where might he look for a new goalkeepr? No doubt he keeps a list of possible targets and will already have been putting out feelers. If I could throw a name into the ring, just for the fun of it, I can think of a talented keeper who hasn’t got onto the pitch yet this season and also just happens to be second to Mayebi in the list of Wrexham’s most effective keepers. Does anyone have Chris Maxwell’s number?
