It’s hard to stand isn’t it?

None of us know fully what’s going on. None of us have any idea if our club has a future in its current form. All of us are suffering a level of anxiety which is damn near unbearable.

But then, that’s been the normal state for a Wrexham fan over the last eight years or so, hasn’t it?

Just take last Friday as an example. After the Conference’s statement, outlining four conditions which had to be met by  close of play on Monday, things looked bleak; there was certainly a wrist-slashing atmosphere on Red Passion.

Then came the directors’ statement that the ground sale had gone through, and suddenly everything was comiing up roses.

But still we have to wait, as it seems we have been for so very long. It’s agony isn’t it? and as Steve Martin says, time can take on its own elastic quality: Monday night feels much more than a day and a half away.

And of course, it’s highly unlikely that on Monday night we’ll know what’s going on; in fact in a way I hope we don’t because if there’s an early verdict it seems likely to be a negative one. The Non League Paper is reporting this morning that we’ll meet three of the four stipulations laid down by the Conference, but struggle to offer the quarter of a million pound guarantee. That matches up with my understanding of the situation; I believe it’s not so much about us not having the required cash (the ground deal should see to that) as that it’s impossible to provide proof in time. Banks can’t just whistle up guarantee documents, so the liklihood seems to be that the club will have to go to the Conference and say they’ve met three out of four conditions and proof of the money will be along in a day or so.

It seems to me that the Conference will then have to reveal their hand. If they’re merely getting reasonable assurances from us while giving us every chance to continue, then we’ll be okay. If, stung by the flak they got for allowing Chester to start the season two years ago, they’re determined to avoid a repetition, they might slam the door in our faces.

And don’t assume the Conference will be benevolent. Plenty of clubs have hard luck stories about how they’ve been treated at the hands of those who run the game: take a look at yesterday’s opponents for proof! Northwich were demoted from the Conference North a year ago, as the money they were due to receive from their cup run, which would have covered their responsibilities, hadn’t arrived in time from the BBC.

Let’s wait in hope that our fate is rather happier!
