After Sunday’s win at Aberystwyth, Steve Dale was quite harsh on his team.

He suggested the win was rather scruffy, and he was disappointed by that. Of course, this is a good sign in many ways. He is a hard task master, he has standards which he expects to be met, and he is relentless in pursuing his goals.

However, it has to be said that in the context of the season, and the goals that his women’s team have, this was a massive result.

To scrap it out at Aberystwyth and come away with all three points a great result. Cardiff City, Swansea City and Cardiff Met are expected to take 3 of the top 4 places when the season splits for the playoffs. Our immediate ambition is to be the fourth side when the split is made. Beating massive rivals like Aberystwyth on their own patch is crucial if we’re going to achieve that goal.

Aberystwyth are also aiming for that goal. So are TNS. Next Sunday, we complete a crunch doubleheader against the sides vying with us for that fourth slot.

I like Dale’s desire for improvement, but for me the win at Aberystwyth was a terrific achievement. We suffered a horrible start, conceding as we looked to pass the ball out from the back in the fifth village, although it should be said that the quality of Jenkins’ strike past Del Morgan was magnificent. In contrast, neither of our goals were pretty, but we were the better side for the rest of the game and our fighting spirit deserved to be rewarded.

It was a match which cut up rough, as neither side would back down in the face of the challenge. Wrexham’s back four was superb, winning tackles, dominating in the air and refusing to buckle when pressure was applied late on. In truth, Town didn’t create much after their early strike.

The game went nicely with the men’s game at Bradford the day before. Both sides travelled to face strong teams and attacked in the hope of landing three points, with no quarter given or asked. In both games we were energetic, strong and organised; ultimately we achieved two good results for Wrexham AFC.

And now on to next week, where another massive double header awaits us. The fun never stops!
