Good job we’ve a new-found liberty in the transfer market, because we’ve inadvertently wandered into an injury crisis.

Christian Dibble’s knee injury has left him in a leg brace, and sadly it’s been confirmed that he’ll be long-term absentee.

It’s a cruel blow to Dibble, our longest-serving player and a real servant of the club. The arrival of Mark Howard already increased the level of competition for the goalkeeper’s spot, but with Rob Lainton also suffering a long-term injury,,at least Dibble was guaranteed a spot in the match day squad for the foreseeable future. Until last Tuesday, that is.

Dibble is a popular member of the squad, and an important part of the positive spirit which is so evident around the players. He’ll still be part of the positivity around the place, but we shouldn’t forget that he’ll be digging deep to overcome the frustration of missing out.

So what is the plan going forward? Phil Parkinson and Steve Parkin have spent the week looking for a new goalkeeper, but are reluctant to rush into a permanent transfer to get a body on the bench for Saturday’s season opener against Eastleigh. Most likely, the short term problem will be resolved tomorrow with the arrival of a new goalie either on loan or a week-by-week contract.

After the Eastleigh game has been played, the management team will turn their attention to a permanent signing in time for the Yeovil match. Expect Saturday’s bench to feature one of those future quiz question players that got on the bench but never made it onto the pitch.
