Well, I suppose at least that helps us to focus our minds. For half an hour this looked like a mismatch as Wrexham dominated the game and Woking looked like a side with injury problems coming into the match off six games without a win and a heavy loss in their last match.

If we’d scored in that period – and we ought to have done- things might have turned out very differently. But we didn’t. Dele Adebola missed a good chance, Danny Wright hit the bar and Elvis Putnins, making his second start at this level, made some sharp saves. And then the game went away from us and never cae back. If it hadn’t been for Chris Maxwell, the only Wrexham player who could honestly say he had a good day, our first defeat to Woking would have been far more emphatic.

As we’re dealing with what-ifs, Glen Little wasn’t too happy with the referee after he failed to give him a free kick in the build-up to the opening goal. I think he had a point, but there was a certain inevitability about the breakthrough and anyway, it was unreasonable to expect a correct decision from a referee who so consistently gave poor decisions. Someone ought to tell him Comic Relief is over, and his sponsored wrongathon can now end.

No excuses though: Woking might have ridden their luck at the start, but they grew into the game and were deserved winners. Billy Knott, on loan from Sunderland, was superb in midfield as Woking wrested control of the centre of the pitch from us, and Kevin Betsy was a constant threat, usually down the left.

The side looked tired. I’ve confidently predicting the collapse of Newport as their fixture backlog catches up with them, but ours is just as bad, and ultimately you can’t ask players to keep going to the well without something giving.

Alarmingly, Jaydene Stockley got both goals, and ought to have had a hat trick, hitting the bar in front of an open goal from three yards out, despite not looking like a terribly threatening forward.

But most worryingly of all were the injuries to Dean Keates and Martin Riley. It was put to Andy Morrell after the game that perhaps he ought to have rotated more with this match coming less than forty-eight hours after the Mansfield game, but it’s hard to see what else he could have done. More injuries are the last thing he needs.
