Recently, I bumped into former Red and current Bala Town maestro Mark Jones in town. The 28 year old who had two spells at Wrexham with a year at Rochdale in-between, has been Welsh Premier League football for 3 years now after being released at the end of the 2009-10 season. A legend in his own right for his commitment and utterly unbelievable performances in a red shirt, I asked Mark why he doesn’t try and get back into the Wrexham set up, and his response was that he is not good enough.

I digress. Now I know it’s not as simple as just turning up to Wrexham and asking to play! Obviously there are scouts out there who have done a wonderful job in the recruitments made in the recent seasons which have pushed Wrexham up from a mid-table Conference team, to a Play-Off challenging team 3 seasons in a row. But Mark is only 28 years old, the age where a lot of footballers hit their prime! I mean, it’s not as if the Welsh Premier League is a terrible standard either. Let’s not forget, Nick Rushton was on loan at Newtown last season and now he’s flying in the first team.

Mark enjoyed his best season with the Reds in 2005-06 when he banged in 15 goals from midfield, winning a place in the League Two team of the year. After seeing his performances for Bala this season, I wouldn’t argue against him doing a good job in the Wrexham midfield, which would add to the experience of Glen Little and Kevin Thornton, two players who have been around the Football League.

Jones is a playmaker, and now and again Wrexham run out of ideas and Jones could bring that bit of genius and quality to the midfield.

One player who recently made the leap from Welsh Premier to Conference is Jamie Reed, another former Red. After being released by Wrexham in 2008, Reed travelled around Welsh teams such as Colwyn Bay and Aberystwyth before finding his feet at Bangor City. There he hit a magnificent return of 41 goals in 52 games before being snapped up by Conference York and then winning promotion to the Football League last season.

It can be done, and a player who made such an important contribution to Wrexham can easily slot back in to the team he loves. Not for one second do I believe he is not good enough for Wrexham. However, this is merely my opinion. So Mark, if you read this, give your old pal Andy Morrell a shout and get yourself back into that Wrexham team!
