ImageBelow are some players that I believe can make fantastic additions to the Wrexham squad in our cause to gain promotion and even challenge for the title.

Jon Shaw
The twenty-eight year old striker was released by Gateshead in the summer and could be a fantastic addition to Andy Morrell’s side. A prolific goalscorer in his two years at Gateshead, the man from Sheffield accumulated 56 goals in 97 games for the Tynesiders. An out and out striker, Jon Shaw could link up well with the direct play of Danny Wright as well as the pace of Adrian Cieslewicz. With another goal scorer in the club to add to Jake Speight’s 21 goals last season, it could be the dream strikeforce that is needed in order for Wrexham to finally claim the title. With Shaw being a free agent, he wouldn’t even cost a penny, an absolute bargain!

Ashley Cain
The twenty-one year old winger showed a lot of promise for AFC Telford last season, tearing down the wing all season long for the Lilywhites. Despite only signing for AFC Telford in January after a successful loan spell from Tamworth, Cain surely would not turn down a fantastic move to Wrexham, who could yet again be title contenders next season. Despite being young, Cain has plenty of experience, playing in the Championship for Coventry City where he made his competitive debut at the age of nineteen. A rapid winger, his injection of pace could terrorise defenders and with Cieslewicz on the other wing, the wings could be a valuable weapon in the charge for promotion next season.

Darren Kempson
The former Wrexham centre back showed he still has what it takes to perform well in the Blue Square Premier. After one season at Wrexham back in 2008/09, he was loaned out to Forest Green and then left to Accrington Stanley. On his latest return to The Racecourse this season with Alfreton, Kempson put an absolutely solid performance in at centre back as his side ran out unlikely 1-0 winners. With the sale of Nathaniel Knight-Percival to Peterborough United, Wrexham are in need of another centre back to strengthen the defence because at the moment, there are only three recognised centre backs at the club; Mark Creighton, Chris Westwood and Leon Clowes. If Kempson returned to The Racecourse, he would be the solidity at the back needed along with Creighton, a centre back partnership that could be the platform Wrexham can build on to challenge for the title.

Gunnar Nielsen
The twenty-five year old goalkeeper was recently released by Manchester City and would be a superb addition the team, due to Chris Maxwell’s departure to Fleetwood. With Joslain Mayebi as the current first choice goalkeeper, the arrival of Nielsen would provide excellent competition to the Cameroonian goalkeeper and if given the chance to play, would be a solid addition to the defence. Already known to the Wrexham faithful after his loan spell in 2009 which was unfortunately cut short due to a broken hand he suffered in a match against Oxford United, Nielsen is also remembered for nearly scoring from his own half when he hit the bar from his own kick! If he considered dropping down to non-league, then he could re-build his own career and in the process, help Wrexham to achieve promotion to the Football League.

Danny Alfei
Another name recognisable to the Wrexham supporters, the Wales Under 21 captain spent the 2011/12 season on loan at The Racecourse from Swansea City. After the sale of Curtis Obeng in January this year, Alfei filled in at right back for the remainder of the season and performed spectacularly when called upon. Despite suffering a minor set-back with a calf injury, Alfei was solid in the right back birth and contributed magnificently to Wrexham’s flowing, attacking football. After the Luton game in the Play-Off Semi Final last season, Alfei said he would definitely consider coming back on loan at Wrexham, but only after he had discussed what the future holds for him at Swansea.

So there are just a number of transfer targets that Morrell could consider in the summer to strengthen the squad, which in all fairness, does not need that much of a change to. All of these names though in my opinion, would make great signings and additions to strengthen Wrexham’s squad and help the cause for promotion back into the Football League.
