More records guaranteed as Our Lil tops the charts.

The Wrexham Angle

It’s all about the result, obviously, but it’s also all about Lili Jones stamping her name all over the record books. If she appears at Jenner Park she will equal Rosie Hughes’ club record of 113 appearances to go alongside the marks she already has: most assists and most league appearances. And she is 21 years and a month old. Wow.

She is enjoying a magnificent campaign already, having already scored more goals than she has in any previous season, including strikes in both Champions League games at The Racecourse. Maybe the FAW, having suddenly remembered they can recognise Adran Premier players by calling Faye Knox up to the inaugural Under-23 development squad, might want to have a look at her big mate as a potential midfield partner?

The preoccupation this week has been Katie Barker’s knee. She landed horribly when challenging for a high ball into the box last weekend, and had a large ice pack on the injury as she watched the remainder of the game from the bench. It looked worrying but hopefully there will be better news once the swelling has gone down. Still, it’s the height of optimism to assume she won’t be missing a few games starting on Sunday.

It’s not as if we don’t have firepower to cover any possible absence: Jenny Sugarman was right to mention Ava Suckley’s selfless performance against Cardiff Met, Natasha Thomas is back from her trans-Atlantic journeys and Evie Sadler will want to add to her first Wrexham start last Sunday. Throw in players like Knox, Mikayla Cook, Millie Davies and Mariam Mahmood who can play as wide strikers or number 10s, and we’re spoilt for choice. By the way, didn’t Mahmood look in the mood to put a defence to the sword when she came off the bench against Cardiff Met?

After a beautiful Summer and an unseasonably pleasant first three weeks of October, it looks like our luck will hold and there will be no rain for the Wrexham faithful heading on the long trek south as the usual trend of filthy weather for Adran Premier games continues to be bucked. It doesn’t look like the men’s match on Saturday will enjoy quite the same good fortune thought!

The View From The Other Side

After Steve McCarthy-Campbell’s torrid second debut as Barry manager at The Rock last September, which ended in a 7-0 defeat, he must be pleased with the way his side has improved in the last couple of weeks. The Linnets were in a bedraggled state after losing their manager just two disastrous games into the campaign, having shipped nine at TNS the previous week. They showed an immediate improvement without troubling the scorers over the next two games, conceding four against both Cardiff City and Swansea City, but have been receiving more tangible rewards since then by picking up their first points of the season.

They could easily have gained more than two points from those most recent games. First they lost a 2-0 lead which they had accumulated by the 21st minute at Cardiff Met. When Gracie Howard pulled a goal back just after the hour it looked like Barry’s lack of familiarity with victory – they hadn’t won in their previous seven games at that point and had lost their last six – could come back to bite them, but Howard was sent off soon afterwards and it looked like the points were heading eleven miles south west until a 98th minute penalty thwarted the visitors. The following weekend offered a real chance to get a first victory of the season as The Linnets headed to Park Avenue to face an Aberystwyth Town side still searching for their first points of the season. The basement battle started badly when Aber took an early lead but Barry showed they have enough firepower to trouble defences in the bottom half of the Adran Premier by storming into the lead by the break. However, they would be frustrated by a late goal once again as Libby Isaac scored an 84th minute equaliser.

Since earning their only win over Wrexham in October 2024, a victory clinched when Erin Lovett was sent off almost immediately after coming on as a 72nd minute substitute and Ellie Preece scored the only goal from the resulting free kick, Barry haven’t beaten any side in the top half of the table, and have only enjoyed victories over Aberystwyth and the sides which were relegated in the last two seasons, Pontypridd United and Cardiff Met.

McCarthy-Campbell doesn’t have the scope to switch his squad around, but that tightening up at the back is a tribute to his ability to organise a side. He has been lacking the strength and direct pace of India Shenahan for the last two games, and her presence up front or on the side of the pitch is not only useful in terms of posing a threat to the opposition, but also helps to relieve pressure. To pick up their first points of the season in her absence was a positive and her return would certainly help the manager continue to keep a gap between his side and Aberystwyth in the sole relegation spot.
