Wrexham will be buoyed by a terrific atmosphere today as the club enjoys the first day of the rest of its life, but Dean Saunders’ side will have to beware or ring-rustiness as it goes into its opening fixture of the season. With pre-season games cancelled and the players having an unexpected hiatus in their training schedule as a result of the problems off the pitch over the last month, Wrexham will be going into the game a little under-cooked, as I blogged earlier, and might need the adrenaline of a good atmosphere to roar them on.

They will be faced by a Cambridge side in transition; whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is something we won’t know until five o’clock. On the one hand, under former youth coach and Director of Football Jez George, United are certainly focussing on youth. Their expected starting eleven is certainly raw; the oldest outfield player is twenty-five and has no experience at this level. Will that mean they’ll buckle under the occasion, or that they’ll have the fresh legs required to run an under-prepared Wrexham down?

They’re likely to play a 4-4-2, so whether the wide men can push Neil Ashton and Curtis Obeng back into their own half could be a key question, but one suspects that if Wrexham can get an early advantage, their superior experience should allow them to press it home.

There’s been plenty of attention on Danny Wright before the game, which is quite natural as he is making his debut against the side he jut left. Looking at his day is likely to pan out in more detail, it’ll certainly be interesting to watch his battle with two of the better young centre backs in the division; Coulson has already established himself as a very useful part of Cambridge’s side, while Wylde is their one eye-catching Summer signing, an imposing figure from Tamworth who has immediately been announced as club captain.
