26th September 2000: Nationwide League Division Two

AFC Bournemouth 1   Wrexham 2
(Jorgensen 5)   (Morrell 87, Ferguson 88)

Incredible Fight Back Earns Victory

Wrexham’s terrific away form continued with a dramatic victory at Dean Court which staved off fears of a crisis at The Racecourse after the disappointment of the Robins’ fifth home defeat in six games on Saturday. Two late goals by Andy Morrell and Darren Ferguson took the Reds’ current away record to six wins in seven games, stretching back to the clossing stages of last season, and extended an excellent recent record at Bournemouth.

It was a disasterous start, though, with Claus Jorgensen scoring within five minutes of his return to the side after suspension, having been allowed the freedom to run across the face of the box with little hindrance. Matters got worse when Dave Ridler was forced to leave the field following a clash of heads. With Brian Carey beginning what is likely to be a long lay-off, Ridler’s injury left Brian Flynn with only one specialist centre back available with first team experience in Steven Roberts, and he was paired with Mark McGregor in a patched up back four which might become a regular fixture as Ridler starts a three match ban on Saturday.

With Martyn Chalk returning after flu to bolster midfield, Wrexham showed composure but little penetration, and were fortunate to survive a Hayter shot which hit the post before Brian Flynn decided to shake things up with the introduction of Andy Morrell in place of Hector Sam, who had to pass a fitness test to take his place in the side. Morrell made an early, crucial impact, getting on the end of a Carlos Edwards cross at the far post to head home his first goal of the season, and his hustling presence forced Stewart into a poor clearance which Darren Ferguson capitalised upon, chipping home to earn a sensational and much needed victory.
