Welcome to the start of the rest of your season! Wrexham have set off like a train, but here’s where it gets interesting. Everyone’s entitled to occasionally getting off to a flyer, but that doesn’t mean you’ll still be around come April-at the risk of tempting fate, let’s call that phenomenon Gateshead Syndrome. However, a cursory glance at impartial commentators, whether it be reporters for the Non League Paper or opposing managers, suggests there’s a growing consensus that we might be the real thing. In five days time I suspect we’ll have a much better idea if that’s the case.

Thus far, with the exception of Tamworth, we’ve faced sides that haven’t got off to the fastest of starts. Of course, it’s dangerous to draw too many conclusions from early season form, not least because each of our opponents’ form has been damaged by the fact that they’ve lost points to us. However, a league table based on the form of the opposition faced by each side so far in the Blue Square Bet Premier has us fifth from bottom.

Fleetwood and Kidderminster represent very different challenges though. Before the season began I felt there were five serious title contenders: us, York, Luton and the two teams that come to North Wales this week. Taking them on will give us a much clearer picture of what we’re up against, and how we measure up to them.

Don’t assume I’m being pessimistic in pointing this out though; by the same token, two wins in these games will make the table look very nice indeed, and haul us up that opponents’ form table too!
